Dr. James Naismith, the creator of basketball, visits Hardwick on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at 7 PM at the Memorial Building!

AHA! James Naismith, Creator of Basketball is a living history performance from the Vermont Humanities Council sponsored by the Friends of the Jeudevine Library. Dr. Naismith has influenced millions worldwide, but few recognize his name. Despite humble and tragic beginnings, he became a minister, professor, and physician. The uncommon common man's ingenuity and humanitarianism are amazing and inspirational. Meet Dr. Naismith in Robert Cheney's energetic and engaging performance; hear his life story - its creativity, character building, "muscular Christianity," and the arts all interwoven, including the story of how, at Springfield College in Springfield, Massachusetts, he invented basketball.
Robert Cheney becomes Naismith. He grew up near Springfield, Massachusetts and graduated from Oberlin (where he is now in the Athletic Hall of Fame). After receiving M.A.s in both psychology and history, he taught both subjects. He works extensively with students on community service projects. Author of Basketball's Origins, he has performed "Dr. Naismith Live" at the Halls of Fame in the United States and Canada, Springfield College, the World Scholar-Athlete Games, and many Vermont venues.
So, come and meet Dr. Naismith in November. There will be refreshments and conversation after the performance.
